Preparing For Adoption

I found this great article about preparing for an adoption on iVillage the other day. I love the first paragraph:
"Waiting to adopt a baby is no less bewildering an experience than pregnancy. Time frames in adoptions are much more open, and you are much less in control of various extenuating circumstances - will you find a birth mother willing to put her baby up for adoption? Can you find an agency that will satisfy your needs? Just how long will it be until you can bring the child home? Successful adoptions happen every day..."
It's a great read, and I hope it helps a bit during your wait time! :)

Possible Special Needs Situation

We've been notified of a baby already born who may be a special needs situation. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who might be interested. We're really looking to find a family for this sweet girl!

We have a Caucasian baby girl in our care born on the 1st of September who needs a family. She has been in a neonatal unit since her birth, experiencing feeding/swallowing difficulties. It has been discovered that she has suffered a mild stroke (probably occurred in utero) in the cerebellum region of her brain. Doctors and therapists are continuing to evaluate her needs and seem confident that she will be feeding by mouth soon. We have been told that the area of the brain where the stroke occurred controls balance, coordination and motor skills. The amount of damage to this area caused by the stroke (if any) will not be known for months or even years. The birthmother reported alcohol and some cocaine use during her pregnancy. Although she reports no further use after 26 weeks (when she learned she was pregnant), the drug screen showed marijuana in the baby’s urine (indicating exposure within 48 hours of delivery).
The birthmother is seeking a loving family for her baby. She is a lovely, intelligent young woman who would like to remain in contact with the adopting family. If you--or somebody you know-- may be interested in adopting or fostering this child (until a permanent family can be found), please call our office immediately. Please call me if you have questions or an interest in learning more about this situation.

August 27, 2008 Situations

Here is the updated list as of today:

1.) *NEW* Native American Girl, 9/10/08, Iowa, $27K-$32K, Drug and Alcohol Exp during pregnancy
2.) African-American Boy, Due Date 9/15/08, $14.5K
3.) African-American Boy, Due Date 9/29/08, $14.5K
4.) Caucasian Unkown Gender, $35K
5.) African-American Boy, Due Date 11/2/08, $20K, LA
6.) African-American Unk Gender, Due Date 9/23/08, $20K, TN
7.) Hispanic/African-American/Puerto-Rican Male (alcohol exp), Due 9/25/08, $19.5K

Two of our situations are babies who have been exposed to drugs and/or alcohol during pregnancy. I got the best advice when we were considering our comfort level with drugs and alcohol. A fellow adoptive mom told me to schedule a consultation with a pediatrician to ask about different drugs and their side effects. We did and felt much more comfortable with certain exposure levels and felt much more educated about how to handle different issues and with what we could handle. If you're thinking of considering a baby born with drugs or alcohol exposure, I highly recommend seeing a pediatrician so you can make an informed decision:)

As always, feel free to contact me via email karalee@christianadoptionconsultants.com if you have any questions or are interested in any of the above situations.

New Situation - Due August 26!

We have a new situation due very soon! The birth mom is in GA, but does not want a GA family. The baby is due August 26th and is an African American girl. Please contact me immediately if you are interested!

Why Use A Consultant?

Most often, when people decide to adopt, they assume the only way to do it is to sign with a local agency and sit on a waiting list. I know because that is what I assumed. We contacted a local adoption agency and were told the waiting list for a newborn baby was 3 years. After battling infertility, I couldn't imagine waiting another three years to be a mom. So, I started doing some research and found Christian Adoption Consultants. Here are a few of the facts that convinced me using a consultant was the way to go:
1. I was confused and overwhelmed! :) There is so much information and so many different agencies out there and every single state has different laws. How do you know which to choose? CAC has strong relationships with reputable agencies. We work only with licenced, trustworthy agencies with whom we have developed personal relationships. For me, it was a great comfort and relief to be able to put our adoption in the hands of experts who were working as advocates for my husband and I.
2. You will not sit on a waiting list for years. Being submitted to multiple agencies lets you be shown to various situations at a time. I know in our situation, we completed our homestudy at the end of September and our daughter was born April 2. That is less than six months from start to finish!
3. At CAC, we work typically in states that are considered "safe" for adoptive families. The birth mother usually signs her consent within 24-48 hours after birth and cannot revoke after she signs. For us, we were comforted in knowing that there wouldn't be a long waiting period in which we would be holding our breath worrying that our birth mother might change her mind. CAC consultants are knowledgeable about state laws and avoid situations that are not in the adoptive family's interest. This sort of protection was a major plus for me.
4. CAC offers a great deal of guidance and advice financially. Adopting is expensive. Beyond just agency costs, there are legal fees, homestudy costs, travel expenses, etc. Part of our consulting benefits include providing our couples with knowledge of a variety of resources such as grants, low interest loans, creative financing advice, and more. In addition to the knowledge provided, we will do everything we can to help you make wise financial decisions. In our situation, we had a specific budget that we knew we could not go over. CAC worked with our budget and helped us avoid more financially risky situations.

Adopting can be overwhelming; believe me, I know! But, as a consultant, my job is to make your adoption as quick, safe, financially sound, and rewarding as possible!

If you would like to read a Blog post about how we come across situations to post please click HERE.

A quick note about fees, they can definitely be overwhelming at first.  Remember that God provides for us.  My husband and I were both teachers before Lily was born; we were in no way financially wealthy.  But, it was amazing the way money became available when we turned it over to God and trusted Him to provide for us.  There are numerous creative ways (bake sales, yard sales, benefit dinners, etc) to raise money along with grants, low-interest loans, and a helpful tax credit.  Also, while adoption is expensive, ethical agencies like the ones we work with use much of the funds for counseling, housing, medical expenses, etc. for the birthmom and the baby.  We were so thrilled to know that our daughter's birthmom received counseling both before and after her birth!  If you'd like more information about expenses or have questions, please feel free to contact me! :)

Consulting

Welcome to A Path of the Heart. Adoption has truly become a part of my heart. As the mother of a beautiful daughter through adoption, I am now thrilled to be working in the adoption field. We adopted our daughter, Lily, sixteen months ago with the help of Amy and Malcolm Young at Christian Adoption Consultants. I consider it an honor to now be working with them to help other couples adopt as quickly and safely as we did. We signed with CAC in Sept and our daughter was born April 2. Our adoption took less than six months!
I hope to use this blog to write about adoption, my experiences as a consultant, and to help others who are interested in adopting. Please feel free to contact me either by email at karalee@christianadoptionconsultants.com or at 502-442-7806. Thanks for being a part of this new journey in my life! :)
